When we look at our life and bodies, we see the basics or the the outer covering. We see the skin, hair, nails, eyes, etc… but we are so much more. Internally there is a system so intricate that you don’t see it or feel it until something stops working properly. We get a pain, acid reflux or a lump. When using the systematic approach to better health and healing you integrate all the systems of the body for optimal health.
I recently, in a meditative state, saw my body internally from the rib cage to the top of my knees. Yes, you read that right. I saw the cells, organs, veins, and tissue right before me. I even saw a parasite eating away at bacteria. It was one incredible meditation. It was like seeing thermographic with the yellows, greens, reds and whites.
Since being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002, I have been on a mission to live a healthier life. In 2008, I became a licensed massage therapist and have enjoyed learning the body ever since. One of the best trainings I ever participated in was called “Stop Chasing Pain” by Perry Nicholston, DC. He is an incredible teacher and he teaches you “that where it’s at, it’s not”. In other words, where you are having pain is usually not where the problem is. I recommend you follow him on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/stopchasingpain/. His training has allowed me to help so many clients overcome pain and injury.
It is never to late to focus on your health and in this blog I am going to educate you on the systems of the body that get ignored by you and that need attention for your body to function properly and to improve your health. There are many systems of the body but I am going to focus on these 7 systems.
Lymphatic System
The Lymphatic System is one of the most important systems of the body but the least talked about by health professionals. It is gaining more attention as science continues to study the body. The main features of the lymphatic system is it filters all the toxins out of your body. When you swollen lymph nodes, say from a cold, it is normal as the system is working to rid your body of the toxins and illness. Inflammation in the body can be a side effect of a sluggish lymphatic system.
When I had my partial mastectomy in 2003 on my right breast the surgeon also removed all my lymph nodes, I had 21, leaving me with no way to filter the toxins out of that area. I have to be extremely cautious of getting injured on the right arm, chest and armpit. I also have to be careful not to have compression to the arm to prevent lymphedema.
Since your lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump like the heart, you have to manually create a pumping system to keep the lymph flowing freely. Bouncing on your toes daily is a great way to get your lymph system moving. If you are sedentary in your job, I highly recommend bouncing on your toes a few times throughout your work day.
The Lymphatic System is one of the major systems you definitely want to pay attention to.
Respiratory System
The Respiratory system is probably the most important system because without breathing you really can’t stay alive. If you stop breathing and don’t get oxygen to the brain your body will shut down and death is eminent. We recently witnessed the importance of receiving immediate care when the professional NFL player Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills went into cardiac arrest for over 8 minutes. One of the main concerns was if he was going to have damage to his brain due to the lack of oxygen to the brain. Fortunately for Damar he survived and is recovering well at the writing of this blog.
Your breathing is tied to having a health mindset. Proper breathing techniques such as breathing in through your nose and out your mouth will ease anxiety and stress. Practice mindful breathing daily. Meditating for 5 minutes per day is a great way to start controlling your breathing and to start your day.
When I work with my clients, I always start them off with learning how to breath properly so they can think better and relax during life coaching and massage sessions. Incorporating a systematic approach to focused breathing will provide for better health and healing.
Circulatory System
Your heart pumping and the blood flow is also crucial to your survival. Medically, we have come along way to being able to use stents, pigs valves and technology to clear blockages and replace damaged valves. Keeping your heat, arteries, veins and capillaries healthy prevents a hos of health issues as you age. Controlling your diet is crucial to a health cardiovascular system.
The Standard American Diet (SAD) today is truly sad. Processed foods and a sedentary lifestyle has led to an increase in cardiovascular disease. Exercise to insure your blood flow is pumping through out your body properly.
Digestive System
The Digestive system is part of what is called the “hollow organ” system. The hallow organs start with your mouth, esophagus, intestines, stomach and end at the colon and rectum. It is important that your diet consist of healthy foods so these organs can digest food properly to keep them healthy. As we progress with technology and the creation of instant processed foods we have to be careful not to become part of the generation of ” need it now” and continue to prepare our foods at home to get the most nutrients from our fruits, vegetables and proteins. By incorporating a systematic approach to your diet you will create better health and promote healing.
Our food pyramid is a very antiquated system and needs to be updated. We use to have pasta as a side dish but now due to the increase in processed foods, we use it as a main dish. We need to relearn potion control because diabetes is on chronic disease on the rise, affecting adults and children,
The World Health Organization in September 2022 https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/diabetes posted that diabetes rose from 108 million cases in 1980 to 482 cases in 2014. Diabetes can damage the heart, blood vessels, kidneys and create neuropathy. A healthy diet and exercise can prevent this disease.
Muscular and musculoskeletal systems
Both of these systems work in Unisom. Many of our body aches and pains come from increased sedentarism. Our stress at work and home has caused people to sit more and create an unhealthy life style. Over the years with instant gratification, more work demands, and increased technology, we have become less active which leads to poor posture, muscle weakness, obesity and other health issues.
The Center for Disease Control statistics show that in 2016, 69.9% of residents in a nursing home are women and the top five reasons have nothing to do with disease and illness. The top five reasons all have to do with they can not take care of themselves because they have no body strength.
Endocrine System
The endocrine system which encompasses the thyroid, pituitary and the adrenal glands is your command center for all of your hormones. Much of your fatigue comes from over stressing this system. When the thyroid comes back underactive or overactive you need to look at your lifestyle and diet. It can be controlled if you research the right diets and exercise program for you.
I do not recommend trying to maintain this system on your own. There are holistic and medical doctors that can help you if caught early. Do your research because you want to have optimal health and taking medications or supplements on our own may cause more illness.
Nervous System
The nervous system is the overall command center of your body. Taking care of your nervous system is crucial to optimal health. You have 2 systems within the nervous system, the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system controls the brain and your spinal cord which send messages to the rest of your body to tell you how to move and function. The peripheral nervous system consists of many nerves that branch out from the central nervous system. The nervous system is complex in that it controls your voluntary movements of raising your arms, walking, sitting but also the natural activities you do like breathing, your heart beat and digestive system.
Spine care is important for keeping your nervous system healthy. One way to to keep your nervous system working properly is hanging from a pullup bar daily to decompress the spine. Chiropractic care is also a proactive way to maintain proper nerve and immune health.
I encourage you to start a healthier journey and incorporate a systematic approach to better health and healing.
